On the Ganguly-Chappell controversy

Wednesday, September 21st, 2005

I wrote this a few days ago. For the past few months I was unable to have regular net access wherever I went. I have got a very good IBM laptop now and an on the go net connection. So my thoughts on the contoversy surrounding Indian cricket from Lucknow:

On the back ground of Ganguly being one of people who deals with the media very well, not having made off hand remarks in the past 7 years, should the remark regarding Chappell be taken as off hand or a strategic statement to flutter feathers Ganguly wanted to?

Also, a lot of opinions circulate within a team. There are so many players a captain and a coach. A difference of opinion and differences can certainly exist. So why make such a issue over it by making a public statement?

Chappell is an Australian legend and he has rightly rubbished talks of him stepping down (circulated as rumours in the media). I understand now more than ever before why he was stringent on contract specifics. The BCCI would lose a lot of money if they would even think of sacking Chappell.

Also Chappell will be his own individual as he rightly should be. Why should he agree to some one else, who ever it is if he does not believe in a point of view.

I doubt Chappell has any hidden agendas and he would want to improve cricket. He is a legend. What else would he want. Ganguly is facing a tough time in his career. He certainly is a good enough one day batsman to play till the 2007 world cup. But I do not believe he is as bankable a test player. The last thing ganguly would want is a person with a strong opinion in the team management. But can Ganguly get rid of Chappell even if he wants to? I doubt.

The drama continues

Thursday, September 15th, 2005

The gladiators of the sporting world continue to create their mark. England has won the Ashes and the cricketing world cannot get enough of talking about it. Kim Clijsters has won a slam finally. Andre Agassi has been denied by the indomitable Federer. The Champions league has begun and I am happy Barca has managed to win its game.

Closer to home the Sunfeast Open WTA Tennis tournament will begin in Netaji Indoor Stadium right here in Calcutta on September 19th. I have the tickets for the last three days.

Will I be able to meet some of the stars? Keep track of sportolysis for my experiences from the tournament.

Another injury for Nehra

Thursday, September 8th, 2005

Ashish Nehra is again injured. He is perenially injured with phases when he is fit is the better way to put it. Right from the days when he had played a single test, was out of the team for some time due to injury, that Nehra has had his long term affair with the injuries.

I remember Nehra was slated to come witht the North Zone team to Calcutta for a Duleep Trophy match. He could not because of course, he was inured! A few days ago when the guy was selected again to the Indian team, I had written:

And Nehra has underperformed for most of his international career. This may well be his last chance in the one day squad but it is a chance he deserved. I think he will make the most of it.

Nehra performed well in the matches he played. Its some more anguish for Nehra and his fans.

On Mirza’s performance versus Sharapova

Thursday, September 8th, 2005

I watched the full match and was quite impressed by what I saw. I have always been a fan of the Mirza forehand but the back hand was not too bad either in the match. Mirza always hits a lot of winners but I did not expect her to hit so many versus Sharapova. The fact that she could match Shrapova for power, break her, take games into 40/deuce was over whelming as an Indian sport fan.

So how a score line of 6-2/6-1?

The thing called experience. Mirza was horrible on the second serve. She tried to play it safe after a fault and Sharapova would attack the weak second serve. Also, the unforced errors, though much lesser than the previous games, were a bit more that feasible to win games.

This are not huge errors and can be minimised. I definitely think now than Mirza is a top 10 player in the making. Mirza is going to play in the Sunfeast Open in Calcutta from September 19th. I will go ona weekday and on the finals Sunday for the tournament, which promises to be a treat for tennis fans.

Mourinho seeked clean sheet

Sunday, September 4th, 2005

After unnecessary comments after the loss against Barcelona, Mourinho got the well deserved suspension. Now it has come out Mourinho wanted it specified that he was all clear now. UEFASpokesman William Gaillard:

I was quite surprised to hear that he wanted the slate cleaned, because as far as we were concerned everything had already been sorted out.. We have a tradition in football that applies to managers just as much as it does to players. If you are sanctioned, you serve your suspension, pay your fine or whatever and then you start again with a completely clean sheet.

I stated earlier that Mourinho will always be in the news. Even if its for last season’s controversies which are over by now!

The nightmare continues for the Aussies

Sunday, September 4th, 2005

First they lose to a county side. Then Bangladesh thrash them in a one day game. Then they lose in a miserable fashion in a twenty20 match to England. Then McGrath keeps getting injured in the wrong moments to miss 2 of the 4 played tests of the Ashes.

And now, Essex has thrashed 500 in a day.

It could not have gotten any worse for the Aussies. Christmas has come early for England.

It all boils down to the Oval where Australia can still manage to save the summer by winning the match. A weird English summer of Ashes party comes to an end with the September 8th-12th final Ashes test.

The sporting world is full of anticipation.

Mirza vs Sharapova – a preview

Sunday, September 4th, 2005

We all know it is highly unlikely Mirza will defeat Sharapova today. Sharapova is 18, like Mirza but as far as achievments and accomplishments are concerned, there is a world of difference. Sharapova finished the year in the top 50 in 2003 (rank 32) when she was 15 and a half! Mirza ended 2003 ranked 399.

That is just the beginning of the story. Sharapova has been world number 1, she is a phenomenal player and overpowers her opponents. She has already won a Wimbledon and it would surprise many if she does not go on to win many more grand slam titles. In short, Sharapova is a tennis superstar and has the potential of becoming a legend.

Sania Mirza is a path breaker in her own right. No Indian female tennis player has been competitive at any serious professional level before. They have been stranded in the challengers. This is not related to talent in the country but the lack of infrastructure and financial restraints tennis players in the country face. The fact that there had been no past female tennis player to look upto in the country made it even more difficult for a female tennis star to come up from the country.

In 2005, Mirza, some one who has a superb win-loss record all through her career from the junior level onwards, has a 25-15. Sharapova has a 43-7. Do fans expect Mirza to beat Sharapova? Nah.
But because it is a first in Indian female tennis that a player has reached this far in a grand slam every one will be keyed up.

I have been followed tennis for 13 years from the age of 9 like it has been with most sports and have never seen any Indian reach ahead of round 2 in singles in the grand slams. Leander Paes was talented but too agressive which meant too many unforced errors. I have only heard the tales of the Krishnans and the Amritrajs. Finally there is a tennis player whom we Indian fans can call their own. )

Mirza rolls on

Saturday, September 3rd, 2005

By defeating Bartoli in the 3rd round of the US Open, Mirza becomes the first Indian woman to reach the 4th round of the US Open. Just to give an idea of the accomplishment, no Indian woman had appeared in the main draw of a Grand Slam before Mirza in the Australian Open, 2005.

In the US Open, Mirza has made further strides, much faster than many people anticipated. Versus Maria Sharapova in round 4, there is no pressure on the 18 year old. Can Mirza create an upset and defeat Sharapova? She did defeat the defending US Open champion Kuznetsova a few months ago. Very unlikely that Mirza will win versus Sharapova.

One thing is for sure, Indian tennis fans are very happy!

Unconfirmed reports of Mirza injury

Thursday, September 1st, 2005

After facing trouble in her 2nd round matchup, news is coming in that Sania Mirza has opted out of the doubles but will play in the 3rd round in singles despite not being fully fit. This is a big concern as she cannot be expected to perform to potential carrying an injury.

I cannot find any news regarding the same on google news or any where else but a TV station was carrying the same.

Here is hoping the doubles lay off will help Mirza recover to put a good performance in Round 3.

Come back delayed

Thursday, September 1st, 2005

Tendulkar is out of the tests to be played in Zimbabwe as well and early optimism based on the return of Tendulkar hinging on hid selection into the 13 man squad has been dashed. The maestro, once regarded as God in India is now being treated with disdain by many fans which is infuriating. If Tendulkar would have played in the series, and scored a century, they would have chanted ‘Tendulkar can score runs only against the weak teams.’ Now they will chant ‘he is injured and past his best.’

Tendulkar, it seems, can never satisfy the unearthly expectations of his fans. I am glad Tendulkar is taking as much time as he deems fit before making a proper come back. As fans, there should be as much support as possible for the player in what is the most difficult phase in his career. Sadly the fans are doing the opposite.
