Brian Lara - A Good Choice
Ryan Patrick live blogs the press conference which announces Brian Lara as West Indian cricket captain for the third time. The general feeling is that this is a bad decision, a terrible backward step. When Lara was appointed captain the second time, the general feeling was that it was a very good decision. Public opinion, as we know, is fickle.
The West Indies are struggling at the moment. So they certainly cannot become worse with Lara now, can they? Brian Lara has the experience. Brian Lara has been inspirational and proven in parts like in helping the Windies win the Champions Trophy in 2004. So why can Brian Lara not be a stop gap arrangement till the World Cup at least and help the Windies to some proud victories?
When you are down and out, the only way you can go is up. Almost every one is convinced that the current captain, Shivnaraine Chanderpaul is not up to the task as things stand. Most wanted a new captain. Jagadish over at Cricket 24×7 says:
If Sarwan was unwilling, I’d have given the job to another Trinidadian, Dwayne Bravo. From what I’ve seen, he is a real talent and is one of the few chaps whose place in the side is guaranteed purely because of his performances.
But what if the new captain would have proven a terrible failure? Would it not have mean further humiliation for the Windies in the all important World Cup next year?
Brian Lara is a good choice given the circumstance, in my opinion.

Fair call, Pratyush. But given that there’s absolutely no guarantee that WI will do well when Lara is captain [I pointed out their abysmal test and one-day records], it is tough to see how he can change things around. Like I said, Lara is a very good strategist. He obviously did get his captaincy right especially when India collapsed for 81 chasing 120 at Barbados in 1996/7 (his first test as captain after Walsh pulled out). But I can’t see him integrating the team.

This may well be a backward step. But I think it is a bit unfair to compare the present Lara to the one that was a distraction to the team, quite like comparing the Chris Cairns that rebelled and quit the touring team once in the 90’s to the avatar that helped resolve players’ strike in 2002. By the looks of it Lara works hard at reign in his impulses in team situations these days.
The WI team is plain bad now, and painfully so as lack of involvement and application seems to be the overriding reason amongst a bunch of players who are at least as talented as the New Zealanders.
