Who the Hell is Mel Kiper Jr.?

Bill Tobin asked this in 1994 and found it soon enough. Kiper is all over the TV this time of the year. Kiper is the man who runs the NFL draft on ESPN. The marathon is a crazy, crazy weekend. As CNNSI puts it:
It’s the end of April, which means sports fans are asking two questions: Who the hell is Mel Kiper Jr.? And when is he going away? The annual draft onslaught has been in full force since well before the college bowl season began, and this year it’s being laid on thicker than Ed Hochuli’s neck. At this point, the NFL draft has become the most overanalyzed, belabored event in all of sports…
Thankfully, it will all be over Monday, and we can get on to what’s really important: exhaustive NBA draft coverage. Now there’s a draft where the coverage means something and you don’t get a bunch of early-pick busts. I can’t wait to choose between my Michael Olowokandi and Joe Smith jerseys and take in some exciting first-round action.
The NFL Draft has reached crazy proportions this year. It is on the tv, it is in the newspapers and of course it is on the internet. You really cannot escape it. The big talk is on Reggie Bush this year - supposed to be a player for the generations. Critical Fanatic is doing a good analysis of each position.
There are of course the millions of mock drafts every one is doing:
Phew!

The NFL Draft is a very curious occurrence … it’s on for two days in a row, and it gets more and more boring with every pick. People only stick around for the first round, and usually it takes 15 minutes per pick. Multiply that by 32 teams, and that’s one boring couple of hours.
But sometimes trades happen in the middle of the draft and people will switch picks. That’s pretty interesting.

That is really boring Matt! I was wondering why it takes so many hours. I guess you answered my question in that comment.
I hope some interesting trades do happen.

Well it doesn’t start for 10 hours, even though we know who went No. 1. I guess it unofficially lasts three days.

Righto Suss! I cannot really believe Bush’s not the first pick.

[…] If you haven’t heard it already, Bush will not be the number 1 pick.Dead spin puts in a quality headline, not for the first time. So was it just to prove Kipper wrong? Well, it does show that all the pre talk counted for nothing. Go for a player because he is attacking or defensive? If the difference in talents between the attacking and defensive player is huge, would it not be sensible to chose the much more talented player and then trade him off intellegently? The returns will not come? If the player in question is indeed that talented, why could a proper trade not be worked out? […]

I have never been much in favour of online shopping. The idea that the ancient physical delight of strolling the marketplace or bazaar and taking in its sights and smells might one day be replaced by clicking and dragging from a desktop is one I have always found more repugnant than convenient. But that was before I found out aboutWhat is Etsy? If you ask its founder, 27 year old Brooklyn based Rob Kalin, Etsy is “a childhood word from a Fellini movie” that he chose because “it embodies the curiosity of imagination” (the naughty Kalin has also playfully told the press that Etsy comes…http://bestnews-4u.com/
