Football Commercials #11: Football vs Soccer
Andriy Shevchenko is asked “why not call the world football game soccer to avoid all the confusion once and for all regarding which game is which?”
I ask, “would the americans rename American football (NFL) as Dockey if the world decides to call it that?”
Heh.
Update: Geoff points out that he is being asked to call American football Soccer and keep calling football football. I guess I got confused. Wouldn’t the suggestion, if followed, make things all the more confusing?
Also, how would American fans take to rest of the world calling their football soccer?
Maybe we should call every thing Dockey and settle the issue once and for all!

That’s not what he’s being asked. He’s being asked to call American Football, soccer, and keep calling what the rest of the world calls football, football.

After re-viewing the commercial, I see that you are right Geoff. I got confused I guess. :)

ESPN has a series of commercials with their SportsCenter anchors interacting with celebrity athletes in a working setting–I couldn’t believe it when Shevchenko was onscreen!

I have seen a few ages back - one featured Sampras, another McGwire. I thought this commercial was pretty cool..

Well, the catch is that outside the US is called ‘american football’ not football. Nice spin though, trying to promote what?
And yes, he is suggesting to start calling ‘american football’ soccer and keep football as football.

Not trying to promote any thing.. any thing to resolve the confusion. So I hope you are enjoying the dockey.

What confusion???
The world call it ‘american football’ and football is called football. I don’t see any issues with that.

Confusion in the earlier comments of the post. What you said was quite clear. :)

The man on the left is Scott Van Pelt — one of my favorite SportsCenter anchors.
Just FYI.

Football will always be called football.
American football/ rugby/ handball is known internationally as gridiron.
If americans are serious about making their “steroid sports” big around the world then they will have to start calling it “gridiron”.
There is only one football and always will be only one football, it is played with the foot and a ball.
Thankingyou.

I did not know that American football was called gridiron in the international market. Very interesting.
