Onions…

.. is the name of the latest fast bowler recruited by the English cricket team. It epitomises England’s bowling troubles that they have to select a player whose List A and first class bowling averages are 35 and 37.10 respectively at the moment. The English fans are crying but others like me can’t wait to see Onions in action.

Update: Matt informs me that Durham’s wicketkeeper is Philip Mustard. So they always get batsmen out “caught Mustard bowled Onions“. Hilarity ensues.

As I mentioned on my blog, Chris Tremlett would be a far better option. Averages in the mid/low 20s in first class and List A cricket, tall, good bounce and three decent ODI performances last year in the NWS.

But of course, he’s not bloody bits and pieces, so Fletcher won’t pick him. Git.

Onions isn’t a bits and pieces cricketer yet despite the cricinfo profile saying so. A glance into the batting averages of Onions will tell you that in a jiffy.

It is a ridiculous selections from a lot of angles. I am with you where you say Tremlett should have been recalled but even if they hadn’t gone for him, they could have gone for any one else really. Onions in fact hardly plays List A games for Durham! More shocking stuff - he got his first List A wicket this season only yesterday.

I’m skeptical. Given Fletcher’s obsession-bordering-on-fetish for bits and pieces cricketers like Clarke, Dalrymple, Jones and his aversion to out and out specialists like Panesar, I’d think that the main reason Onions got in was having some batting ability - even if it hasn’t come to the fore in his brief f/c career so far.

Either that, or he has some incriminating photos of Fletcher…

the same way in which a few england players had incriminating pics of sven!!

A couple of friends from Durham tell me he doesn’t have batting ability as well. The only logical reason does seem either a) bits and pieces (batting talent we don’t know of) or b) England’s obsession with blooding young guys in LOIs (never thought I would say that!).

We will get a bit of an idea regarding what is thought of his batting ability seeing the batting position he bats at today..
