Test Team of Last Two Decades

Pretty much all my cricket watched in the said period. I started watching in 1991.

My team would be -

Sehwag
Hayden
Lara
Tendulkar (captain)
Ponting
Kallis
Flintoff
Gilchrist
Pollock
Akram
Murali

No McGrath, no Warne, no Kumble?

I would keep Kallis out, move Flintoff to #6, Gilly at #7, and get in Kumble or Warne.
Pollock can be replaced by McGrath..

There is no way Kallis can be kept out of it. There is a case for Flintoff to be omitted as he was not good for a consistently long period.

McGrath/Ambrose would make most teams but I would stick with Pollock to give depth.

  3. My test team would look a bit different from yours. Here it goes:

    Virendra Sehwag
    Mathew Hayden
    Ricky Ponting (Captain)
    Sachin Tendulkar
    Brian Lara
    Inzamam-ul-Haq
    Adam Gilchrist (wk)
    Wasim Akram
    Shane Warne
    Curtly Ambrose
    Allan Donald

Reserve Bench: Saeed Anwar, Kumara Sangakara, Rahul Dravid, Waqar Younis, Mutiah Muralidharan

So as you can see, there’s no place for Flintoff in the team, cos to be in my team you either have to an exceptional batsman or an exceptional bowler. Hence, an allrounder isn’t really required. Given the batting strength of the team, I’ve instead gone with an extra bowler – King Curtly.

Similarly, there’s no place for Pollock, cos Donald in my day can demolish any batting attach, which Pollock can’t. The batting positions of Ponting & Lara are interchangeable. And I’d rather not have Tendulkar as captain.

The reserve has 1 player for each major portion in the 11.

That is an excellent team mate. My only issue is with Inzamam. I would rather have Kallis in that team personally as he is also a more than capable bowler. Inzamam is one of my favorite players of all time and a case can be made for him ahead of Kallis in that in crisis situations, Inzamam was probably better. At No. 6 though, one V.V.S. Laxman averages 48 (Inzamam – 36, Kallis – 26). So a case could probably be made for him as well. It is pretty interesting.

    Business, that’s easily defined – it’s other people’s money.
