Soca Warrior’s Day

June 11th, 2006

England vs Paraguay 1-0

A 1-0 victory was good enough for England to get 3 points. However, the match left the English asking more questions about their team than being particularly happy. Paraguay isn’t the strongest of sides. England creeped to victory rather than having a convincing performance. Any thing can happen in football but I don’t see England causing a serious threat in the competition if they don’t improve on the pitch drastically.

Sweden vs Trinidad and Tobago 0-0

The Soca Warriors are celebrating. 10 men Trinidad and Tobago have held off Sweden. Sweden dominated possession. Sweden attacked a lot. However, they hit very few shots on target and nothing materialised into goals. There was the very good defending by T and T and the excellent keeping by Shaka Hislop. It is all about scoring goals though. Maybe Sweden should not have kept that extra man marking Stern John and had attacked more. The English will be very happy with this result. It makes qualifying for them a lot easier!

Argentina vs Côte d’Ivoire
2-1

The match was expected to, and produced, the best match of the tournament so far. The pace was faster than any thing we have seen in the tournament. There was controversy as well when the ball crossed the line (looked like that to me at least) but the referee did not give a goal to Argentina early on. That did not matter as Argentina scored two more. Drogba pulled one back to make things exciting in the last 10 minutes. Ivory Coast have a lot of talent and would have easily qualified in most other groups. It can still be possible as they can give Holland a run for their money.

Jesus and the World Cup

June 2nd, 2006

From the Official Jesus and the World Cup site:

The World Cup is the world’s biggest event for the world’s most popular sport. When your team wins, you can feel great; when your team loses, you can feel terrible. It’s what makes soccer exciting — some years your team does great, other years it may be a real struggle. If soccer is your source of happiness, then your life can go up and down.

There is just one source of peace and joy that doesn’t change — and that is God. Having a personal relationship with God can give you true peace no matter what happens on the soccer field. Here are 4 key steps you can take to begin a personal relationship with God.

Don’t like football? You can always check out Jesus playing rugby, baseball and basketball. Buy some religious merchandise here.

Jesus is so sporty. It is sad that some fans still blame him then.

Paris: The Night of Love for Football Fans

May 17th, 2006

It is here then! The match which promises so much. The match every one - particularly the Barcelona and Arsenal fans have been waiting for.

Arsenal, in their best years in the recent past (a couple of years ago when they were winning domestic titles) were performing very miserably in Europe. It was a very good team but critics said that it could not be termed great until it won the big ones in Europe. This, the performance so far, is probably a couple of years late. It was totally unexpected that Arsenal would reach the Champions League final in the year it almost finished 5th in the English Premiership - some thing which exemplifies how it has been a crazy ride of emotions for Arsenal fans. The ride isn’t over. There is still pondering regarding Henry going to Barcelona (some thing I, as a Barcelona fan am very much over excited about). Regardless of that, the season could be perfect for Arsenal if they do manage to win the Champions League.

Go the Hammers!

May 13th, 2006

The FA Cup is one of my favourite tournaments. It is made for the underdog. It gives them enough room to cause an upset and have some truly special magical moments. There is the financial reward which goes with each win, of course - so important for development of smaller sides.

Today, then, most people who aren’t Liverpool fans, will be supporting West Ham and hoping for a memorable victory.

Liverpool start as big favourites. However, West Ham do have some dangerous players and a victory for them is not impossible. Watch it if you can.

Update: Liverpool wins in penalties in what was a memorable FA Cup final. The Gerrard goal in injury time to tie it up 3-3 and force extra time was a blinder. From there, Liverpool looked like scoring more often than the hammers in extra time. They couldn’t. That didn’t matter though as they overcame the West Ham challenge in the penalties quite easily.

The Hammers have a lot to be proud of, though. As a football fan, I couldn’t have had asked for a better final.

Football Commercials #10: Old Lions

May 12th, 2006

This Carlsberg commercial doing the rounds in England brings back memories for a generation of English fans and is quite a favourite among many. I find it quite classy.

Can you identify the Old Lions?

UEFA Cup Final is Here

May 10th, 2006

The UEFA Cup final is here.

Preview from Sky and build up from BBC if you really want to know a bit on the teams and players before the game.

Who will win - Sevilla or Middlesbrough?

I really don’t care. I just can’t wait for a good game of football!

Yes, the football fever does seem to be taking over me.

World Cup Drama Takes Off

May 8th, 2006

Eriksson decided to go in with 4 strikers, one of which is Rooney (injured). The second guy is Theo Walcott - a 17 year old who hasn’t played a match yet for Arsenal at the highlest level. (Check out some Walcott videos here.) Eriksson has also picked Aaron Lennon and Owen Hargreaves. Brilliant intuitions or sheer madness?

There is drama for Ukraine too. Shevchenko is sidelined for 25 days at least. A huge blow for Ukraine who depend so much on him. It will be quite sad if he cannot play in the World Cup. First Rooney, and now Shevchenko. Drama!

Will this World Cup go down as one which missed out on the some major stars? There is still more than a month to go. Will see some more heartbreaking injuries? Or will the script unfold in such a way that we will marvel at how terrific the world cup was, with the drama looked back upon as some thing which added the spice to make a memorable tournament?

I will be watching, whatever happens! One thing is certain though - that Eriksson will occupy English discussions every where and the words, at least for now, won’t be kind.

Football Commercials #2: Chelsea Fans Remember This

April 30th, 2006

Okay Jose Mourinho is saying how he has won 4 domestic league titles in a row - titles first with Porto and now with Chelsea:

This is my second in England and my fourth consecutive title if you include Porto.

So, a nice reminder seems apt right now of events of a few days earlier for the Chelsea fans and their manager, who a year ago, said Rijkaard was not a prolific manager.

Since then, Rijkaard has won 1 league title, is soon going to win a second one and is one game away from adding the Champions League to his kitty.

We all know it was psychological talk but reminders are always nice. :)

Rooney out: English Need French Inspiration

April 30th, 2006

The brief statement from the Man U website reads:

He will be out for six weeks.

Well, told you it was brief! To spell it out, 6 weeks is 42 days. The World Cup is 40 days, 12 hours away. Also, 42 days will be an estimate. No one can say for sure how many exact days it will take. We can say, though, that it is a serious injury noticing the days given.

Also, if he is out for 42 days, how would he be able to just come pick up and play excellent football right from the word go.

Competition From Man U?

April 29th, 2006

If you believed the press hype a few days ago, Man U were going to give Chelsea a good run for their money for the title. 82 minutes are over in the Man U-Chelsea game. A 3-0 drubbing shows what the difference between a clinically and technically proficient team and a Man U - talented, yet just that still, is.
